About Opera Santa Barbara

This Tax Free Non Profit was founded in 1994 by Marilyn Gilbert and Nathan Rundlett, to bring a high caliber of opera to Santa Barbara. The Association consists of a Board of Directors, a Guild, and an Administrative/sProduction Department, each with specific responsibilities.

The administrative/production staff are located at the Opera Office at 123 W. Padre Street in Santa Barbara, CA; part time in the early summer months and full time as our season starts to unfold.

The Board of Directors has the ultimate responsibility for the long term financial and artistic success of the Association. It consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Committee Chairs and Members at large. The Board is responsible for any financial shortages during the production year. Officers are re-elected annually and meetings are held at least monthly. There are several Committees within the Board: Finance, Fundraising, Education, Nominating and Marketing.

Our home in the historic Lobero Theater is an intimate (only 650 seats) and romantic setting for our productions. Visit us and experience opera the way it was intended by the composer.

The Guild is a volunteer organization operating as a society of friends to the Opera Company. Members stage regular social fundraisers throughout the year, held in various private homes in the community. Guild members may contribute hands on assistance during productions, such as assisting with costumes, wigs, sets, and refreshments for cast during rehearsal and performances. Many of them house cast members during productions. Guild fundraising projects contribute significantly to cash flow.

The Education Department arranges for noontime performances in local high schools and junior high schools. We feature arias from the current production. Students also have the opportunity to attend our full dress rehearsal. This helps us fulfill an important part of our mission to reintroduce this art form to our schools

Visit our education page to see how you can bring opera to our children.
