The
mission of the OSB is to produce and perform opera, to stimulate
interest in opera through performances and educational outreach,
and to serve the cultural life of the community through means
including but not limited to encouragement of musical talent in
a nonsectarian, no partisan, inter-racial and multi-cultural manner.

One
of our goals is to educate all audiences, especially the school
age audience, to the the wonders of opera. The opera education
curriculum is sensitive to current things in education in general
and to our community in particular. It presents opera as a vivid
literary, dramatic medium for the expression of human conditions
within an artistic framework, and strives to develop an appreciation
for the dramatic and musical arias in a new generation of theatre-goers.
The education program is designed to provide listeners with innovative,
stimulating opportunities to experience opera and to ultimately
to becomean opera enthusiast. The education programs are part
of a continuum, directed toward students at appropriate stages
in their development. Some programs might begin with participatory
operas for younger students, and then progress to more challenging
works at the secondary school level. Interdisciplinary in design,
the programs emphasis the relevance of opera to contemporary life:
themes and dilemma's have importance now, in the new millenniums,
as they did when the operas where composed. A Teacher's Guide
accompanies each opera and when we perform in the schools, we
offer translations of the arias. We have been encouraged by the
enthusiastic reception in the schools.
